Whenever we hit our elbow, we experience a very unpleasant feeling. Everybody had that feeling as if an electric shock is piercing through your body. People call this vulnerable spot a funny bone or a funny nerve. What is so funny in that bone that makes it hurt so much?
The reason for such an unpleasant feeling is a pinched elbow nerve. It is located very close to the skin and performs an important function. It transfers the signals from the brain to our arms and hands. It goes from the spinal brain to the shoulder and forearm and gets bifurcated inside the pinky and ring fingers. The bones cover the elbow nerve all along its length. But there is a place where they do not. A certain angle of the impact over a hard object can get exactly into this vulnerable spot and the nerve gets pinched. The nerve is quite long so you feel it along the entire arm down to your fingers. The feeling is extremely uncomfortable but it passes quickly. Massage your elbow for a couple of minutes and it will disappear. However, sometimes this pain does not go away and occurs from time to time without any injury. In this case, there is a disease called cubital tunnel syndrome. People who suffer from it can even lose the function of their arm. This is why it requires timely diagnostic and serious treatment. The treatment can be rather conservative or surgical – it depends on the individual’s condition. Scientists battle about the treatment strategy that would be universal for all such cases, and there is no result yet. So, do not get upset when you hit an elbow and feel that little electric shock. There are some people who cannot get rid of it by simply massaging the affected area. Be careful and watch your bones and nerves, funny or not. Нажмите, чтобы изменить.
